Wk 4 – Artist Conversation – David De Mendoza

Last week, I visited the Max L. Gatov Gallery West to view various artworks and speak with a few artists. This rather startling painting featuring numerous baby heads caught my attention right away.  I quickly began to talk to the artist, David De Mendoza.

These oil painting artworks were done during this summer.  Pairing bright neon colors with dark tones, David utilizes dark shadows to set a mood in his pieces.  After speaking with him, I was surprised to find out he only started painting 3 years ago.  Having grown up doing art casually, he started with penwork and gradually grew his passion.  Art being in his comfort zone, he naturally chose it as a career path.  David said he gained inspiration from various horror films, and began painting pictures of fear and nightmares.

Although I was not able to get a lot of information from David De Mendoza, I was still glad to have seen his paintings because they seem very appropriate to the upcoming Halloween.
